The LURE OF DANGEROUS WOMAN by Shanna Germain: The things that call to us—music, cigarettes, art, women—are as strong and murky as the bayou. In New Orleans, they are the bayou. A DIFFERENT KIND OF MONSTER by TA Moore: It wasn’t Peter’s beauty that attracted Sol, rather his cruelty... He was a cold flame to Sol’s moth. JUST PAST WINTER by Nathan Sims: Prisoner of an enemy pack, Marcus has one chance at freedom. But what will the werewolf have to sacrifice to make it back home? HEMOPHOBIA by Trent Roman: Connor is an (un)living contradiction: a vampire who is afraid of blood. But he’ll have to push through the fear—or his only friend will be dead before the night is out.
THE DIARIST by Mark Silcox: It was Mitchell who found the old man’s diary, but Leo who couldn’t stop reading it. Sometimes the memories of the dead can bleed into the world of the living... AFTER ALL by Laramie Dean: Danny is making enormous changes in his life after his last disastrous relationship...but all it takes is a chalk-white face at the window to spin everything out of control. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY by Stephen Osborne: An evening playing with a spirit board brings terror to Max and Perry when a vengeful spirit from Max’s past is conjured. TOMBSTONE by Raymond Yeo: Nick’s sister is back in town and she’s brought her own demon... CAPTIVE MAGIC by Garry McLaughlin: Bannister is just a harmless old man, isn’t he? At least that is what Scott thinks until a chain of events cause him to suspect that Bannister is anything but harmless. HOLLOW by Jamie Freeman: Theo has a secret life he’s killing for… FOR HER EYES by Quinn Smythwood: Angeline’s life just turned into a fairytale, but there’s something wicked scratching its way through the walls...
REVIEWS
This collection of queer horror stories runs the gamut from psychological horror, to ghost stories, to sheer physical terror. From vampires to serial killers, there's something for every horror fan here. I was delighted to see a werewolf tale sneak its way in, but equally delighted to see each author's unique take on the horror genre, which ensure an anthology that's varied and exciting.
The opening story, The Lure of Dangerous Woman by Shanna Germain is a dream-like evocative tale of two women in New Orleans, fighting old pains and encountering new dangers in the city's dark streets. Beautifully written, with a surreal and melancholy atmosphere, this is easily the stand-out story in the collection for me. You can really see, smell, and hear New Orleans in the writing, and Germain has a lush, captivating style that brings Michelle and Beth's claustrophobic world to life.
The closing story, For Her Eyes, is a slow-burning tale of paranoia and obsession, pitting two young lovers against a sinister woman with a house full of dark secrets. This is the second story I've read by Quinn Smythwood, and it's one that will stay with me for a while. The slow build-up of tension as Angeline uncovers the truth behind her new employer's business is wonderfully rendered, and the final revelation is chilling. This is another star in the collection for me.
Also worth highlighting as the gems in the anthology are TA Moore's A Different Kind of Monster, a bloody cautionary tale that portrays vampires in a refreshingly monstrous light, and Jamie Freeman's Hollow, a gory but elegant thriller. Nathan Sims brings us a tale of wolves at war in Just Past Winter, a short piece that begs to be expanded and further explored.
Whether you're looking for blood and guts or ghostly tales of redemption and loss, Blood Fruit will have something to scare and thrill you. Blood Fruit is a great addition to the shelves of fans of horror and gay fiction alike.”
Naomi Clark (Author of Silver Kiss)
“Blood Fruit has something to appeal to every horror fan, and a really pleasing range of roles for the queer characters ~ the real joy of these very different stories brought together is the range of gay heroes and heroines, gay protagonists, love interests, friends, and family, and above all queer narratives on display.” (4 out of 5 stars)
Rainbow Reviews
“Bloodfruit, a horror anthology featuring several talented GBLT authors, was a surprisingly awesome read. The book features eleven short stories, the majority of them extremely well-written, well-crafted, and completely gripping . I read the entire collection in less than an hour, and couldn’t stop thinking about some of the stories for a long time afterwards.” (Recommended Read)
